Day 12: Describe any public medium by which your faith is broadcast. How does the word, whatever it may be, get out?
I can’t list every religion which is a part of my spirituality; the list would go on forever. So, I have decided to focus on what I believe is the most important system in my life: Paganism. This link is a well-written statement of Pagan beliefs — you can get the whole story there, I think. But I will concentrate on my Pagan belief.
- First of all, the term Pagan does not mean devil worship, or witchcraft, although Wicca is one possible Pagan path to tread. In fact, I will use the text from this link, which defines the term, Pagan, as referring to a polytheistic belief system. Beneath it, there are classifications of Pagans such as Buddhism, Druidism, Heathenism, Wicca, etc. Each path maintains their own traditions, but they are all polytheistic. This is similar to the term “Christian”, in that there are Baptists, Catholics, Mormons, etc. Wicca is to Pagan as Baptist is to Christian.
Pagans do not try to get others to be pagans. We do not proselytize; we are not evangelical, preaching the tenets of paganism in hopes of converting others. So, we require no system or media, as understood in this challenge. But pagans talk to individuals who show an interest in becoming a follower of pagan ideals and rituals. My own entrance into pagan spirituality came as a result of hanging out with S., and her friends in the Keys, one of whom had a shop which displayed and sold ritual items and books of most world religions. In fact, I can’t think of any that weren’t represented in the store.
And that is how the pagan word is passed. Paganism is a gift from one person to another; then that other in turn gives the gift when the time is right. I recommend highly that all readers use the link to read the basic tenets of Pagan practice. What you find there will, I believe, set even the most devoted member of another religion’s mind to rest. I consider myself a little bit of an ultra-pagan, (not really; we are all connected, every person on earth, with everyone and everything else that lives here — no hierarchy.) I follow teachings and deities from many different religions, while adhering to none, other than this one. I never even considered that I would think and feel like this, but I do, and my life is now based on my true feelings and thoughts and beliefs.
